As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the American Medical Association (AMA) did indeed add two new Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes for coronavirus testing. The codes are:
- CPT code 86408: This code is used for reporting coronavirus antigen testing using a multiplex technique that simultaneously detects multiple respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19).
- CPT code 86409: This code is used for reporting coronavirus antigen testing using a technique that detects a single respiratory virus, including SARS-CoV-2.
These codes were added in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic to help healthcare providers more accurately report and track coronavirus testing. It is important to note that CPT codes are used for billing and reimbursement purposes and do not necessarily reflect the accuracy or efficacy of the test itself.
