As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had updated the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) with new COVID-19 diagnosis and procedure codes for the year 2021.
The new codes include:
- U09.9 – Post COVID-19 condition, unspecified
- U09.8 – Other specified post COVID-19 condition
- M35.81 – Multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS)
- M35.89 – Other specified systemic involvement of connective tissue
- M35.9 – Systemic involvement of connective tissue, unspecified
- Z20.822 – Contact with and (suspected) exposure to COVID-19 in other specified situations
- Z86.16 – Personal history of COVID-19
In addition, the CDC has provided new procedure codes to report COVID-19-related services, such as:
- 0212U – Infectious disease (bacterial or viral respiratory tract infection), pathogen-specific RNA, 7 targets including SARS-CoV-2, amplified probe technique
- 87426 – Infectious agent detection by nucleic acid (DNA or RNA); severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]), amplified probe technique
It’s important to note that these codes are subject to change as new information about COVID-19 emerges.
