New CPT Codes For Telehealth Services In 2018

In 2018, the American Medical Association (AMA) introduced several new CPT codes for telehealth services. These codes were added to reflect the growing use of telehealth technology in the healthcare industry and to facilitate reimbursement for these services. Some of the new codes introduced in 2018 include:

  1. 99457: Remote evaluation of recorded video and/or images submitted by an established patient, including interpretation and report, furnished to the patient/caregiver, within a 7-day period
  2. 99458: Same as 99457, but for an additional 5-10 minutes of evaluation and interpretation
  3. 99459: Same as 99457, but for each additional 20 minutes of evaluation and interpretation
  4. 99091: Collection and interpretation of physiologic data (e.g., electrocardiogram, blood pressure, weight) digitally stored and/or transmitted by the patient and/or caregiver to the physician or other qualified healthcare professional
  5. 99451: Interprofessional telephone/internet/electronic health record assessment and management service provided by a consultative physician, including a written report to the patient’s treating/requesting physician or other qualified healthcare professional
  6. 99452: Same as 99451, but for an additional 5-10 minutes of assessment and management
  7. 99446-99449: Interprofessional telephone/internet/electronic health record assessment and management service provided by a consultative physician, including a written report to the patient’s treating/requesting physician or other qualified healthcare professional, for patients in different locations or with different physicians

These codes allow healthcare professionals to bill for telehealth services provided to patients, including remote evaluations, collection and interpretation of physiologic data, and interprofessional assessment and management services. It’s important to note that reimbursement for telehealth services may vary depending on payer policies and state regulations.
