As of my knowledge cutoff in 2021, the proposed changes for the upcoming ICD-10-CM update did include some new codes related to cough and lumbago (lower back pain), among other changes. However, there were no proposed codes specifically related to post-COVID conditions at that time.
The proposed ICD-10-CM changes for the upcoming update were released by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) in August 2021, and the final update was set to be released in September 2021. Some of the proposed changes included:
- New codes for cough due to respiratory condition, such as J41.8 (Other specified chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and J98.09 (Other specified respiratory disorders)
- New codes for lumbago with sciatica, such as M54.41 (Lumbago with sciatica, right side) and M54.42 (Lumbago with sciatica, left side)
- New codes for chronic pain syndrome, such as G89.29 (Other chronic pain, not elsewhere classified)
- Revision of codes related to pressure ulcers to clarify staging and add new codes for unspecified pressure ulcer
It’s important to note that these proposed changes may be subject to revision and may not be finalized until the official update is released. Additionally, updates related to post-COVID conditions may be added in future updates as more research is conducted on the long-term effects of COVID-19.
